What is your company’s purpose?

In work and in life, people generally know what to do, some know how to do it, but few know why they do it. Simon Sinek depicted this as a simple golden circle model in his book Start With Why. He reminded us that we can inspire action in others by focusing on a greater purpose, before getting into the specifics of what to do and how to do it.

From an organisational perspective, the ‘why’ can serve as the guiding light throughout the business lifecycle – while products and services may change, the purpose stays firm.

When people have a true understanding of the purpose they’re more productive, collaborative and innovative. Meaning and context focuses their efforts on the things that really matter. It drives them to work together towards a common goal. It allows them to look at what they do and how they do it, and identify changes to deliver better results.

Many business owners assume that their people have a common understanding of why simply by virtue of working together. They forget to regularly communicate the big picture, allowing team values to form organically and missing opportunities to shape the culture.
